Darwin Deez is an New York indie artist that is going to be your new favorite. He writes, records, produces and arranges using a 4 string guitar and a secret tuning of his design. When you look at him he will remind of of indie Prince. He’s been playing sold out shows in the UK and all of Europe and it’s time the US took notice. This song, Up In The Clouds will immediately turn your mood to good in any circumstance.

Joanna Newsom is an american harpist that is also very popular in the UK that makes some of the most beautiful music you’ll ever hear. She’s one of the only know modern harpist out there and to get the real deal on her you need to see her live or at least watch this video. She is very into polyrhythms and you can hear it a little bit in this song, The Book of Right-On, but more so on her song Sawdust & Diamonds. Another thing that really stands out is how unique her lyrics are, poetic but playful at the same time. You might recognize her from her appearance in the MGMT video for Kids.

The Drums are another popular indie rock band popular in the UK from New York. You might remember founding members Pierce and Graham from the electro-pop group Goat Explosion aka Elkland. They recently placed 5th on BBC’s Sound of 2010. They will remind of the early hip rock bands like Joy Division and The Smiths. This song Forever and Ever Amen is off their 2010 self titled album.

Omar Souleyman is probably the biggest thing in Syria other then the abuse of human rights. Since 1994 he has issued more then 500 studio and live recorded cassette albums which you can find in pretty much ever shop in Syria. The music is choc-full of phase-shifted Arabic keyboard solos and hectic rythems. Mahmoud Harbi is kind of the right hand man to Omar and is responsible for much of the poetry that he sings. You’ll know who he is because he’ll be the guy standing right next to Omar smoking cigarettes whispering the lyrics into his ear from time to time. This song Leh Jani is probably the hit, if you can call it that, and roughly translated we think it means “she came to me”. Come check them out at MoogFest 2010 in North Carolina of all places. You must watch the music video, Click Here.

So to bring it back to the US we have a classic from Tom Waits. He is instantly recognizable from his voice that sounds like a carton of Marlboro Reds being smoked while beer bonging whisky thats on fire (which is awesome but should go with out saying). Tom has been an american treasure since the 70s and has even released a single that was recorded with Kronos Quartet, Greg Cohen, Philip Glass and the mf Dalai Lama called Diamond In Your Mind. This song, Goin’ Out West, is one of our favorites. You gotta love the huge muted kick-ass guitar tones and the all around badassedness of the song. If only this song could play everytime you walked into a bar.

Broken Bells is the new project from Danger Mouse and James Mercer. The two actually decided to work together after meeting at the Danish music festival Roskilde. Danger Mouse you’ll remember from Danger Doom or Gnarls Barkley which James Mercer actually help produce along with being the guitarist and singer of The Shins. The project is experimental melodic pop rock at its best and definitely worth a look.
Listen to
Crash Kings is an LA based rock trio. They have a style thats pretty unique using a keyboard with distortion in place of a typical guitar. In this song the keys have a more piano sound and you got to love how he pounds on the keys and gives it that ‘good golly miss molly’ early rock feel. His voice slightly reminds me of Billy Talent. This song You Got Me is off their self titled debut album.
Listen to
Discovery is an experimental indie funk rock project of the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend, Rostam Batmanglij, and Wes Miles the vocalist from Ra Ra Riot. This song Osaka Loop Line is not as poppy as the rest of the album LP but is the stand out in my opinion.
Listen to
Boys Noize is probably one of the best modern electro dance bands out there. This song Jeffer, is off their latest album Power. This song is the real panty dropper but you could literally put this album on and let it play instead of having a dj.
Girls + Guys ÷ the sauce x Boys Noise = Banger.
Listen to
La Dispute is an intense post-hardcore band from Michigan. Their style reminds me of mewithoutyou in a bar fight with their ex girlfriend’s new boy friend and all his friends while winning the fight. This song How I Feel is off their most recent album which was a split ep with Touche Amore called Searching for a Pulse/The Worth of the World. Their also currently working on another split ep with Koji and if this album is any indication, its going to be pretty fucking bonkers.

M83 is a electronic/dream pop band from France lead by Anthony Gonzalez. Very Tears-for-Fears-ish with softer vocals, a great example of the shoegazing genre. This song Kim & Jessie is off their 2008 release Saturdays = Youth. Anthony was working on the soundtrack to the french film Black Heaven (trailer here) recently which ended up having two M83 songs on it along with 5 tracks from his back catalog

Foals is usually known for its breed of dance alternative rock but this slight calmer more powerful song Spanish Sahara shows how they can switch it up. This is a very special collaboration version with the London Contemporary Orchestra they recently released with a video on youtube. The deluxe edition of this album, Total Life Forever, is now available, we highly recommend it.
Listen to
The Horrors is a British indie rock band that will remind you a lot of Joy Division and She Wants Revenge. There style of raw driving rock may take you one or two listens to get into but then you’ll be hooked. This song I Can’t Control Myself is off their latest release Primary Colours.
Listen to
This is probably one the radest things we’ve herd in awhile. Bring Me The Horizon is a pretty popular hardcore band from the US and this song Sleep With One Eye Open has been remixed by Tech-One into one of the most bad ass dubstep songs you’ll ever hear. It goes to show that dubstep is a growing phenomenon that can be mixed with any genre and sound wild. The intro is a bit of a build up but be patient because when it kicks in you’ll shit your pants in the best of ways.
Listen to
Orbs is a new experimental supergroup of sorts with Adam Fisher and Clayton Holyoak from Fear Before, Between The Buried and Me‘s bassist Dan Briggs and Cradle of Filth‘s touring Keyboardist Ashley Ellyllon. The band sounds like if Muse and Coheed and Cambria fucked on psychedelics. This song A Man of Science is off their debut album Asleep Next to Science.

The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is a bad ass blues-country band out of Indiana. They made an appearance on warp tour this year and really made an impression on a lot of people. Even if your not into country the slide guitar and bluesy style of this song, clap your hands, will get you.
Listen to
Twin Shadow is one of our favorite new artist. It’s one of the most original vintage futuristic styles around. We’ll be catching up with him next week in Brooklyn so stay tuned for that video. This song, At My Heels, will grow on you and get stuck in you head like good brain cancer (the kind that gives you super powers).
Listen to
Ghostland Observatory is some gnarly ass electro rock. It just gives you this groove when you listen to it that is unstopably cool. They made their debut on one of my favorite old shows Late Night with Conan O’Brien. This song, Silver City, is a pretty old release of theirs but is so damn good I had to put it on this mixtape. Be sure to check out this album delete.delete.i.eat.meat and their newest album Robotique Majestique.
Listen to
Kid Sister I chose this song Pro Nails (Rusko Remix) ft. Kanye West, for a couple of reasons. First off cuz I have a little bit of a crush on Kid Sister and the original song has one gem of a beat. Secondly I chose to show you the dubstep remix to talk a bit about this style of music if you aren’t familiar. Dubstep for the most part is classified by electro dance music with reverberant drum patterns, overwhelming bass, and clipped vocal lines. It seems to be popping up all over the place including the new MIA album. Keep your ear up and you’ll see it’s spreading all over the place like an std in a nudist colony.
Listen to
Scissor Sisters has been around for a little while now with hits all over the place that you would recognize if you herd them. This song, Any Which Way, is their new single and reminds me of reincarnated Bee Gees in the awesomest of ways. Their on a would wide tour right now so make sure you catch them while you still can. Put this song on and get down.

Pretty diverse playlist this time, let us know what you think.

Best Coast is a LA based lo-fi grunge surf rock duo. This song, When I’m With You, is off their new album Crazy for You that got some major attention from being streamed for free on urban outfitters before it was released. It is the quintessential chill summer album and another step forward in the lo-fi movement.
Listen to
M.I.A.‘s new album /\/\/\Y/\ is fucking bonkers. It’s a little more dark artsy and a little weird but in the best of ways. It’s so stylistically diverse that its hard to put it into words, but I’m going to anyway, sri lankan-lofi-bitcrunch-grungetechno-popsurfcore-hiphop. Derek Miller from Sleigh Bells did some production on the album who you might remember from the band Poison the Well back in the day (I know, the guitarist from Poison the Well and M.I.A., I had a what the fuck… awesome moment too). I remember hearing that she was quitting music after she had her baby so I kinda stopped following her, then she straight pulled a Jay Z and came back, and what do you know Jay Z has a remix of XXXO on the album. This song Steppin Up was the first song I herd off the new album and soon as it got to the little bridge part at 2:49 I was sold.
Listen to
Weatherbox is a band led by ex-Mister Valentine and My American Heart member Brian Warren. This song Trippin’ the Life Fantastic isn’t off their latest release The Cosmic Drama but rather the 2007 release American Art. It’s just such a good song and the opening guitar riff will hook you for sure.
Listen to
Pierce the Veil has a new record, Selfish Machines, that just dropped last month and it’s a monster. This song Besitos is pretty brilliant. The album is produced super well and some of the vocal lines are almost like MJ came back to life. I remember awhile back wearing a Pierce the Veil shirt outside of my friend’s thrash show smokeing a cig, minding my own business, when this fat stupid fuck in a Fish tshirt looked over at me and said “pierce the veil… really man?” I just want to take this opportunity to say fuck you to that fat grotesque fish masturbating anal clamp of a fat greasy fuck, and I don’t even have a problem with fish but they suck just like you.
Listen to
Old Man’s Child is a bad ass black metal band from Norwegian. “Old Man’s Child” stands for “Son of the Devil”, or “Child of Satan”. It’s the brain child of former Requiem member and current Dimmu Borgir member Galder. This song Slaves of the World is off their latest release of the same name.

I was a little weary of this first track by Portugal. The Man off their new album, American Ghetto, since they put out such a monster of an lp only last year. Not to worry though my people, this is another awesome summer album that is definitely worth the listen. Next is a quick look into Die Antwoord, a new hip hop group out of south africa. I was almost turned off by the group at first listen but their rawness, catchy hooks, and chick with a sweet ass haircut pulled me back in like the sarlacc. All I’ve herd about their new album $0$ is that it’s dropping fokken soon on interscope, but we shall see though. I found out about Holy Ghost! because of a dance party they played in Baltimore recently. I herd this one track and bought the ep straight up. They seem to be leaning toward the whole 80s-airy-Tears-For-Fears-ish-New-Order-ish tone but mixed with Chromeo while sipping on some sizzurp. Next Is an oldy from The Hives (yes the hate to say I told you so band) and it’s such a banger, it’s like being in a high speed chase and your the blues brothers. They have a new ep, Tarred and Feathered, hitting the scene July 9th, so get yourself ready. Lastly is some very interesting thrash metal by Rifoki which is for those of you into digital music is Steve Aoki’s new band. Shit is pretty gnar and I hope he keeps this project going because I’d love to hear more. One thing I noticed that is a little weird is that Steve Aoki went from techno to thrash metal and my man Jesse F. Keeler did Femme Fatale, another great thrash metal band, before he went on to do DFA1979 and then now MSTRKRFT. Is their black magic line between Trash Metal and Techno?

Got some fre$h tunes here for you people. First up is this KiD Cudi jam that he colabed with MGMT and Ratatat for. You might know of KiD from the poker face sampled song Make Her Say he did with Kanye (kanyes verse is the nasty btw) or the Day N Night jaunt he did, either way this track is rad. Person L is the singer from The Starting Line’s new band… well I guess not new because this is their second album but believe you me this album is a solid mother fucker. It has an old school rolling stonesish feel too it mixed with bad ass, gasoline, and a cigar. This track will give u a good feel of what it’s about. After that we go on to Sleigh Bells which is a noise pop duo based out of Brooklyn, NY. Real interesting stuff, nothing really like it out there now. Geographer has a pretty unique style too, not nearly has hard has Sleigh Bells but still has a little of that electronic feel mixed with some old world cello action. Lastly I threw in some old school swing jazz from france from my man Django Reinhardt. His guitar style is so rad and a feel musicians can learn a lot from how he does his string slides and verbratto. It would be a great style to try to work into more modern music but is still dope in the orginal context. Oh yea and he only had 2 good fingers on his fretting hand… total bad ass. Enjoy!
